Public sector PR gets deserved recognition
PR Week UK, Friday, 07 October 2005, 10:36am,
It is good to see PRWeek recognising public sector PROs, particularly those in local government (Leader: 'Public sector PR must be nurtured carefully', 16 September).
As an ex-local government PRO I understand the frustrations of those
working in-house with limited budgets and the unique internal and
external pressures only the public sector can bring to bear.
I appreciate the irritations of having one's creative ideas disregarded
only to find that a well-meaning departmental director has engaged an
expensive PR consultancy with no public sector experience to undertake
one of the few interesting projects - often with poor results.
But over the past few years things have started to change for the
better, not only with the growth in recognition of the unique skills of
public sector PROs, but also through initiatives such as 'Communicating
with Communities' and the quality of consultancy support by public
sector specialists.
