U S West awards DDB Needham $70 million account

- Telecoms giant U S West has appointed DDB Needham Chicago its creative advertising business following a four way competitive pitch.

To win the account DDB Needham fought off Bozell Worldwide, Seattle; and two Minneapolis based agencies Campbell Mithun Esty and Martin/Williams.

US West's incumbent agency N.W. Ayer & Partners New York, which has held the telecoms account for just over a year, declined to take part in the review.

Althought exact billings for the account were not disclosed when held by Ayer & Partners it had been worth an estimated $70 million to $80 million a year.

U S West says it will continue to use the "Life's Better Here" campaign developed by Ayer & Partners.
