World Book Day promotes reading with postcards

PR Week UK, Thursday, 10 February 2005, 12:00am,

World Book Day is encouraging readers to recommend a book to a friend with a major national postcard campaign. It is part of a new word-of-mouth strategy to increase public interest in reading.

The charity, composed of publishers, booksellers and libraries, will place eight million postcards in public places across the UK, and in newspapers and magazines in the run-up to World Book Day on 3 March.

The eight different postcards will include the words ‘Dear… I think you’d love to read… because…’ printed on the back.

Literary PR agency Colman Getty, which has handled the event since its inception eight years ago, will manage a media relations programme to promote the postcard campaign next week.

Colman Getty senior account manager Truda Spruyt said: ‘On World Book Day, a news story based around a survey will be released, asking people what books they would recommend certain figures should read – for example, to help Tony Blair win the election.’
