Independent is What the Papers Say paper of the year

LONDON – The Independent scooped newspaper of the year at the What the Papers Say Awards, with judges commending it for its 'groundbreaking' tabloid move and its new opinion-led front pages, which were deemed to have 'changed the face of publishing'.
The award is just the latest that Simon Kelner has picked up. Last month, he was named Media Achiever of the Year at the Campaign Media Awards.
At What the Papers Say, The Sun picked up two awards. One for political editor Trevor Kavanagh, who took home scoop of the year for his exclusive leak of the Hutton Report, and Ally Ross, who won TV critic of the year for the second year running.
The Guardian scooped two photography awards. Dan Chung won photographer of the year and Tom Jenkins won photograph of the year for his shot of Kelly Holmes crossing the line to win her second gold medal for the 800m at the Athens Olympics.
The Times' Matthew Parris won writer of the year for his "evocative, compelling and beautifully written work."
The Daily Mail's Anne Leslie was named foreign correspondent of the year for her "measured, opinionated and thought-provoking work".
The lifetime achievement award went to cartoonist Wally Fawkes, better known as Trog, in the Sunday Telegraph.
Daily Telegraph cartoonist Matt won cartoonist of the year for "saying the unsayable".
