Yahoo! set to launch desktop search tool in January

LONDON - Yahoo! is bolstering its search offering, with a free desktop tool to search computer hard drives expected to launch in January.
The tool, Yahoo! Desktop Search beta, will allow users to search through emails and other files stored on the hard drive. It will not operate within a browser like Google's desktop, which allows users to search the web and computer files direct from their desktop.
The service will use technology from search provider X1 and will take the fight to Microsoft, which has dominated the desktop but is expanding its business with the launch of its own beta search, as well as its launch last week of a new set of communication services to include blogging and picture sharing.
Yahoo! said: "We know that our users want the ability to quickly search for information on their desktop, especially their email and email attachments."
It continued: "We will create customised Yahoo! features that will continue to extend the Yahoo! Desktop Search capabilities. These features will enable our users to search what's important to them whether it resides on their desktop, on Yahoo! or across the web."
