Papers launch charity appeals

PR Week UK, Friday, 03 December 2004, 12:00am,

The majority of national newspapers have chosen organisations committed to alleviating the problems of poverty in developing countries for their Christmas charity appeals.

Last year most nationals ran appeals to help refugees caught up in conflict or those in need of medical care. This year the charities of choice include Oxfam, WaterAid and Streetchild Africa.

The Daily Mirror will next week launch its Christmas appeal to raise funds for Oxfam. Journalists will visit a community in Rwanda throughout the year and report on the difference money from Mirror readers has made.

The Times plans to raise money for Streetchild Africa, elderly charity Rukba and the Jennifer Trust for people with spinal muscular atrophy when it launches its appeal this week.

The Independent’s appeal, which launches later this month, will try to help people living without enough water through WaterAid. It will also support African farmers’ charity Send a Cow.

The Guardian is supporting Concern, which aims to ensure the world’s poorest people have access to food and aid eight further charities working with elderly people living in poverty in the UK.

The Daily Telegraph will raise money for Hope and Homes for Children, which aims to help young orphans across the world find a family. It will also support healthcare charities Help the Hospices and Merlin.
