Davies joined Turner Broadcasting, owner of cable news network CNN, in 2001 from MindShare, where he was managing partner. His promotion comes in the wake of record 27% growth in European revenues for 2002.
He joined Turner Broadcasting to front a new global cross-media sales division, having headed MindShare's Ford Group account team. Since joining CNN in April 2001, Davies has overseen television and interactive advertising deals between CNN and a number of international corporations including UBS Financial Services, Johnnie Walker, InterContinental Hotels and Alfa Romeo.
Based at CNN's London headquarters, Davies oversees a team of 25 working on the UK, Scandinavia and regional sales teams. In 2002, the UK performed particularly well, with the UK showing 40% growth in revenues out of the UK.
According to Davies: "Our revenue growth reflects advertisers' increasing recognition that CNN provides a hugely influential and growing audience with minimal wastage, which has both a disproportionate influence on global opinion and massive discretionary purchasing power."
"In the increasingly important international news arena, we are more committed than ever to providing innovative cross-platform solutions that really deliver for our clients, using bespoke research tools to drive accountability," Davies said.
Davies moves up to his new position of senior vice-president from his current position as vice-president of global client solutions.
Kevin Razvi, executive vice-president of TBS International news advertising sales, said: "Despite the challenges of current advertising trends, CNN has bucked the market to produce one of its strongest performances to date last year."
He added: "Jonathan's blend of leadership skills and aggressive creativity has strongly contributed to building the business in this highly competitive region and we are anticipating a very strong start to the first quarter across all markets."
The global client solutions division is responsible for implementing cross-media deals, capitalising on the portfolio of products across the AOL TimeWarner merger.
The unit will operates everywhere except the US and is staffed by a significant sales team in the UK. It also has teams in Hong Kong, France and Germany.
Davies focuses on deals across CNN, CNN.com and the Turner Entertainment Networks, which include the Cartoon Network, CNX and Turner Classic Movies.
Davies began his career in 1989 at Ogilvy & Mather as a media planner working on Ford and Safeway. He moved to Saatchi & Saatchi in 1995 working on Toyota and Procter & Gamble.
He had a spell with independent creative agency Dolphin before moving back to WPP and MindShare as managing partner in 1999.
