Sales for many of the UK's national newspapers recovered from the seasonally slow December to result in slight monthly increases in much of the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) figures today for January 2012.

In year-on-year comparisons, only the Independent's concise sibling, i, reported a rise in the quality section of the figures. The i overtook The Guardian for the first time with 243,321 copies, although its figure includes 47,145 giveaway bulk copies and it costs 20p compared to £1.20 for The Guardian.

There was growth across the board for the tabloids, including a near 9% lift at The Sun (2,751,219) and a 3% lift for the Sunday Mirror (1,753,202).
