The network announced plans to take its Smooth Radio station national in June last year, following the changes to the rules around regional radio licences in the Digital Economy Act, and the station became national in England on 4 October 2010.

Since then, Smooth has added presenters such as Simon Bates and David Jensen to its line-up, has supported charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Walking with the Wounded, and has held live gigs with acts such as Adele.

Stuart Taylor, chief executive, GMG Radio, said: "Smooth Radio has had an exceptional first year, proving a hit with people across the UK, who love the soulful sound we’ve made our own.

"This performance has been achieved thanks to a huge effort from our talented team. This is only the beginning though – we know there’s huge growth potential for Smooth Radio."

The station is available nationally on DAB, through TV platforms such as Sky, Virgin Media and Freeview, as well as on FM in London, the East Midlands, West Midlands, the North-East and the North-West.
