Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) has called in Aspect Consulting to help with its stakeholder communications and issues management services.

Aspect Consulting: to help raise awareness of rabies control

Aspect Consulting: to help raise awareness of rabies control

Aspect Consulting will also help GARC raise awareness of its rabies control programme and upcoming international meeting on 'Rabies Prevention and Elimination in Bohol' in the Philippines from 12-14 July.

Rabies has been eliminated in Western Europe but it still kills 150 people per day worldwide, 99 per cent of which occur in Asia and Africa.

The disease has hit the UK headlines recently after the move to relax the UK's strict quarantine rules for pets coming into the UK from 1 January 2012. It means pets coming into the UK will no longer have to spend six months in quarantine – although they will need to have the rabies vaccination.

In 2008, in collaboration with the Philippine Government, the not-for-profit organisation launched its first rabies control programme in Bohol, Philippines. GARC used a holistic approach to combat rabies by involving school children, healthcare professionals and more than 7,700 volunteers. The scheme was successful in reducing rabies’ deaths for humans and animals in the province to zero.

The organisation’s upcoming Meeting on Rabies Prevention and Elimination will examine the progress made so far and how to involve other stakeholders to eradicate rabies.
