Flack: Flack's Week
PR Week UK, Friday, 03 December 2010, 12:00am,
Chatham House rules prevent Flack revealing Sir Martin Sorrell's insights at the CIPR Corporate and Financial Group's annual dinner.
Or if he were even there. Or whether the event actually happened. But Flack can reveal the WPP CEO's business know-how comfortably outweighs his musical knowledge. Eagle-eyed Simon Sanders, of Lansons Communications, spotted that in WPP's annual report, given out at the event, Sir Martin erroneously attributes 1970s pop anthem Love Is in the Air to British crooner Paul Young, rather than Aussie popster John Paul Young. Flack nervously waits to see how the City responds to this shocking oversight ...
Of course, Sir Martin has had other things on his mind. This week we learned that WPP is backing Lord Mandelson's plans to set up a new consultancy. The question on everyone's lips: will the new venture be staffed up enough for the Prince of Darkness to have his own woman charged with throwing away his yoghurt pots, as witnessed in last week's documentary on BBC4? ...
One man who could give Mandy a few tips on how to run a powerful lobbying agency is Bell Pottinger Public Affairs chairman Peter 'never knowingly under-lunched' Bingle. But Bingle's Twitter feed suggests that austerity measures are even starting to bite at Bell Pottinger's plush Holborn HQ. 'What is a sensible price to pay for a bicycle?' The heavy-hitter asked his legions of followers this week.
