FREE PRESS A SMALL PRICE
Steve Chisholm, 17 November
In just over two weeks, English football fans will learn whether there will be a World Cup on our shores in 2018 - but it doesn't look likely. The Sunday Times expose into alleged 'votes for sale' - coupled with the BBC's planned Panorama, which looks set to run just ahead of the vote in Zurich on 2 December - certainly hasn't done the English bid any favours. But if losing out on the event is the price to pay for a free, investigative press, then so be it.
APPLE SNOREFEST
Ged Carroll, 17 November
Having grown up in Liverpool, it was gratifying to see on Twitter that I wasn't the only one who didn't give two damns about The Beatles catalogue on iTunes. I won't rant about how the only decent album was The White Album; instead I wanted to point out how badly Apple read the zeitgeist. Even EMI's Twitter feed was much more low-key in comparison. The business media were on message but consumers weren't.
FACEBOOK FORGES AHEAD
Paul Armstrong, 16 November
Whether you are impressed, scared or ambivalent, you can't deny Facebook's vision and ambitious nature recently. Facebook announced a series of changes to its 'messaging' offering: it's definitely not email but you get a new @facebook.com email address. Not to undersell it, however, make no mistake this is a big deal. Oh, and it's not Google Wave although I can see why people are saying it is - it's basically chat with email and SMS added in.
