Media Briefs: BBC considers options for further channels
JULIETTE GARSIDE, PR Week UK, Friday, 16 June 2000, 12:00am,
The BBC is reviewing its TV networks with a view to making BBC1 a more populist competitor to ITV, and moving less popular genres onto BBC2 and a series of new digital channels. While BBC1 would focus on entertainment, there is talk of having BBC2 air more demanding shows, a BBC3 to compete with Channel 4 , and a fourth channel to focus on classical music and the arts, and science, politics and philosophy. The review was announced in a speech given by director of television Mark Thompson this week.
