Voluntary Sector: Taking Action ... Yorkshire Electoral Reformists vs The Government
PR Week UK, Friday, 21 May 2010, 12:00am,
Protesters: Yorkshire Electoral Reformists
Target: The UK Government
Location: Leeds Civic Hall
Date: 15 May
The lowdown
More than 100 people dressed in purple as part of a demonstration for electoral reform outside Leeds Civic Hall. The protest was organised by Wolfstar MD Stuart Bruce. Protesters held a rally outside the hall's main entrance, then marched around Leeds city centre chanting 'we want fair votes'.
Why the protests?
The protesters are calling for a change to proportional representation. The organisation's Facebook page says: 'No matter the colour of your political stripes, the current system is a democratic travesty and can't continue. Millions of people's votes counted for nothing this year due to first-past-the-post - this must be the last election under our broken system.'
How did the Government respond?
No response has been given, but the protesters are hopeful Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will fight their corner. Addressing 1,000 protesters in London on 8 May, Clegg said: 'I've campaigned for a better, more open, more transparent, new politics, every day of this general election campaign.'
How did the media cover it?
Guardian.co.uk covered the protest on its Guardian Local pages, with the headline 'Protesters march for electoral reform in Leeds'. Elsewhere it was covered by news website Newsodrome.
