PlayStation 3 users will be able to stream movies such as 'Avatar', 'The Hangover' and 'Sherlock Holmes' through their console for around £2.99. Users will also be able to view popular US TV series including 'Gossip Girl', 'Heros' and '30 Rock', with prices starting from 39p per episode.

The site, which recently exceeded one million unique monthly UK visitors, began to offer paid-for-streams in June last year, following an agreement with Warner Bros, as well as other content owners such as Cinetic Rights Management, Revolver Entertainment and Black Dark knightiamond

In August last year, Blinkbox struck a deal with BBC Worldwide, handing its users access to full-length TV shows and movies totalling more than 5,000 hours.

Since the service launched in April 2008, Blinkbox has amassed a catalogue of more than 6,000 films and US TV titles.

Michael Comish, chief executive of Blinkbox, said: "The PS3 is the first of a number of devices to which we will be bringing Blinkbox, enabling customers to use our service on their TVs for instant streaming of new blockbuster movies – available on the same day as their release on DVD – as well as a growing library of free ad-supported titles."

Comish added: "As a console owner myself, I knew that fellow gamers wanted access to the very largest selection of movies for instant viewing, and did not want to lose valuable hard-drive space, or have to wait for their downloads."
