A top London university is to offer what could be termed a 'Twitter degree' in response to the growing tech knowledge gap in PR and other sectors.

City University London is launching the Information, Communication and Society MSc for graduates to learn how to use digital materials such as social networking sites as effective comms tools.

Vesna Bujic-Okretic, head of City University’s department of information science, said: ‘If you are a PR expert, ­understanding the techno­logy and its potential within your own brief is much in ­demand.’

In addition to Twitter, the course will focus on sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Wikipedia. The course begins in September and is aimed at political campaigners, PR ­professionals, marketers and tech analysts.

I think more attention needs to be paid to the growing areas in communication especially social networking and media. But I feel that it would be best to develop a course less specific to Westernised social communication tools. Twitter and Facebook may in a few years be behind Asia's QQ \(social networking site) in terms of popularity and I think all areas of social media need to be adressed, not just the ones we are currently familiar with
