Digital expert says Trafigura case shows why comms is best

A top digital PRO has said this week's battle between oil tra­der Trafigura and The Gua­r­dian showed why communications is a more effective tool than the law.

The Guardian this week rep­orted that it had been gagged from reporting a question that had been asked in Parliament the previous day.

But following revelations on blogs and angry protests on social networking sites, the injunction was quickly lifted.

Blue Rubicon head of digital Rob Blackie said: ‘The internet makes it impossible to shut people down.' He added: ‘If you have a choice between using the law or comms, in the long run, comms are a far superior tool.'

Trafigura retains Bell Pottinger for PR support. Agency boss Lord Bell insisted his consultancy was not behind the decision to take legal action.
