Fee income is defined as PR fees plus any mark up. Figures from 1 January to 31 December 2012, rounded to nearest £1,000.

Some agencies (in bold) declined to give figures, citing restrictions imposed by the Sarbanes Oxley Act (2002). Others including Brunswick and FTI Consulting declined to take part. Fees and staff numbers are estimated. For full details see methodology.

(1) Bell Pottinger Private (BPP) and The Good Relations Group are both new entries. They were formed in July last year following BPP’s MBO of parts of the Bell Pottinger Group business. Both have worked out their individual fee incomes for the full year. Other Chime owned PR agencies that used to be part of the Bell Pottinger Group’s entry, but are not part of The Good Relations Group’s entry, include Fast Track, Open Health and Stuart Higgins Communications. Teamspirit has entered separately and is in 89th position.

(2) Ogilvy PR includes Ogilvy Healthworld’s PR and medical education work.

(3) GolinHarris now includes Virgo Health and digital agency FUSE.

(4) Includes Colman Getty.

(5) Portland now comes under the Sarbanes Oxley Act after selling a majority stake to Omnicom in April 2012.

(6) Incorporating Fever PR,Things With Wings and Nelson Bostock Communications

(7) Part of Engine Group.

NE New entry.

Methodology

All the figures supplied by agencies have been signed off by the agencies’ auditors, FD or external accountants.

Some agencies declined to enter figures for the league tables, citing the 2002 Sarbanes Oxley Act. We have estimated some of the larger agencies’ fee income. We use a formula agreed with the PRCA and accountants Kingston Smith W1, which has checked all the figures.

We multiply the agency’s estimated number of fee earning PR staff by an estimated per-head productivity figure for their sector, as follows:

City £400,000

City and corporate £210,000

Generalist – £110,000
