WASHINGTON: The National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling tapped Widmeyer Communications to provide communications support.

The commission was created in May by President Obama in order to establish recommendations about preventing future oil spills. It named Peter Nelson, director of communications at Resources for the Future, director of communications in late July.

Widmeyer was hired to handle public outreach for the commission's meetings, said Nelson. The commission's first meeting was held July 12 and 13 in New Orleans.

The firm is providing media relations, on-site staff support, social media, and creative services, said Scott Widmeyer, chairman and CEO of Widmeyer Communications.

The next meeting is scheduled for August 25 in Washington. The commission is responsible for submitting a public report with its findings to President Obama within six months of the first meeting.
