Mairead Foley, head of public relations at Ireland’s department of social welfare, has quit her post to stand as a member of the Irish parliament.

department of social welfare, has quit her post to stand as a

member of the Irish parliament.



Foley hopes to be confirmed as the Progressive Democrat candidate

for Dublin North East this week. A career civil servant, Foley

set up the PR division at the department of tourism and trade

before moving to social welfare in 1994. She also is well-known

for presenting a weekly television slot giving advice on social

welfare entitlements.
