Lufthansa offers flights to Apple engineer who left new iPhone in beer garden

German airline Lufthansa has attempted to exploit the story of the hapless Apple engineer leaving behind a prototype of a new iPhone to gain some positive coverage for the brand.

Apple engineer Gray Powell saw the highly coveted new iPhone 4G end up on gadget blog Gizmodo after leaving it in an ersatz German beer garden in the US.

Lufthansa's retained digital agency Profero has capitalised on the media maelstrom by publicly offering Powell free business class flights to Germany to sample its Bavarian Beer Garden Business Lounge.

In a letter to Powell, Lufthansa pointed to his passion for German beer and culture and offered the trip as a way of ‘experiencing the best Germany has to offer', while escaping from the heat of the world's press.

The Profero team in New York led the initiative, working together with the Lufthansa team in the UK and Germany.

Yabber Profero managing director Carolyn Watt denied the story was a PR stunt but ‘genuine altruism'.
