Thomas Cook has appointed Jane Smith as public relations manager
for its financial services operation.
Smith, who will be based in the company’s global service centre in
Peterborough, was previously head of corporate communications at
Birmingham Midshires Building Society.
The post, which had been vacant since last November, includes media
relations and internal communications.
In the last ten months Charles Barker, Thomas Cook’s retained agency,
has provided support for the financial services division alongside the
internal travel public relations team.
The financial services division covers Thomas Cook’s foreign exchange
and travellers cheques business. It also includes new products like the
Moneygram electronic funds transfer service, as well as the Visa Travel
Money card, currently being piloted.
’We have relied quite heavily on the traditional services in the past,
but now recognise the need to develop new products,’ said Smith. Her key
task will be to raise awareness of new products.
The Visa Travel Money card allows travellers to deposit money into an
account before they leave the country, which can then be accessed via
cash dispensers abroad. Thomas Cook is also looking at developing a
worldwide telephone card.
