Diary: Ooh ah, could that be Cantona in the next seat?

Shandwick financial division consultant Nick Bancroft-Cooke had a

surprise flying back from a business trip last week.

Bancroft-Cooke was returning from Cape Town in BA’s club class when

reality slipped into the surreal. He was enjoying the new

Oscar-nominated film Elizabeth, which stars Cate Blanchett and sees

football star Eric Cantona make his screen appearance as a bearded

French ambassador. Midway through the film the PR executive had a bit of

a shock when he realised that the former Manchester United striker was

in the next seat.

’I was settling in to watch the movie,’ says Bancroft-Cooke, ’when the

air hostess tapped me on the shoulder and pointed to the screen where

the ambassador was and then to the person sitting next to me. My fellow

passenger turned out to be none other than the man himself.’

Apparently, Cantona was unbearded and not in Elizabethan period dress,

which could account for the fact that he had remained unrecognised up

till that point.

Bancroft-Cooke added that, unlike in interviews with Hello magazine and

advertisements for Eurostar, the footballer did not recite any

poetry.

Perhaps it is only trains, not planes that make Monsieur Cantona feel as

’free as a bird’
