Lorraine Langham, executive director and former assistant CEO (PR

and communications) for Hackney Council, received a special IPR award

for outstanding contribution to local government relations at last

week’s IPR local government group conference.

Langham’s role at the beleaguered council has been described as ’the

toughest PR job in the UK’. Hackney also picked up the PR Week sponsored

external campaigns award for its ’safer streets’ campaign.

The group’s AGM, usually held at the conference, was postponed because

members have not yet chosen this year’s chair. Joint vice-chair Jane

Knox, PR adviser at Forest Heath District Council, was until recently

theonly candidate for the chair. But she is now being challenged by

Laurie Bell, PR manager at North Wiltshire District Council.

The two candidates are divided over what the group’s role should be.

Knox wants to raise the profile of PR in local government, while Bell

thinks the group should simply provide tools for council PR officers to

do their jobs.
