BSkyB has appointed Manchester-based Staniforth PR to promote its

bid for Manchester United Football Club among the club’s local

fanbase.

Staniforth, which was appointed without a pitch last week, will monitor

local media and provide press relations advice to BSkyB executives. A

BSkyB spokesman said: ’We recognise we have a job to do in convincing

Manchester people of the merit of this deal and are going out of our way

to ensure we communicate that it is good for the fans and the club.’

BSkyB announced its pounds 625 million bid for Manchester United in

mid-September.

If allowed to go ahead, the deal would be the biggest takeover in

football history.

The Office of Fair Trading will advise the Secretary of State for Trade

and Industry on whether the deal should be referred to the Monopolies

and Mergers Commission.

BSkyB’s move has fuelled press speculation about a bidding war for the

club. Among those mentioned as potential bidders are CNN and

Interpublic, which owns Weber PR Worldwide and Shandwick.
