The ITV Network Centre has selected former Lawson Lucas Mendelsohn consultant Nick Toon as its new public affairs head.

The ITV Network Centre has selected former Lawson Lucas Mendelsohn

consultant Nick Toon as its new public affairs head.

Toon starts on Monday and replaces Mark Gallagher, who left the network

after three years to head ITN’s media relations and public affairs (PR

Week, 19 March).

As public affairs head, Toon will report to corporate affairs controller

Sue Eustace and work alongside the four other members of her team.

Part of his brief will be to represent ITV in the debate over Home

Secretary Jack Straw’s new Freedom of Information bill.

As well as government relations, he will liaise with broadcast

regulators in areas such as the recent Independent Television Commission

consultation on sign language in broadcasting.

He will also work closely with public affairs staff in the separate ITV

companies, including fierce rivals Granada and Carlton, which dominate

the network.

Toon joined LLM two years ago and was the agency’s policy and research

head.

He was previously a senior researcher at the BBC’s Millbank-based

political research unit for two years.

ITV commissions programmes aired on the national network shared by all

ITV companies.

It is still in the process of recruiting a communications director (PR

Week, 5 March), whose role will include overseeing the media relations

department.
