The Industrial Society’s director of marketing Bill Beaver is to
take the top communications job at the Church of England.
Rev Dr Beaver has been appointed by the General Synod of the Church of
England as director of communications. He replaces Eric Shegog, who left
in March after six years in the London-based post.
Shegog hit the headlines last November when he defended the Lesbian and
Gay Christian Movement’s 20th anniversary service on Radio 4’s Thought
for the day. The ensuing furore coincided with the launch of the CofE’s
new corporate identity.
US-born Beaver, who was ordained as a non-stipendiary minister in 1982,
will manage the communications unit, which has eight staff. The unit
aims to attract effective coverage of the Church’s activities.
’The Church of England is going through a period of change in the run-up
to the Millennium,’ said Beaver. ’It is a time when both internal and
external communications are going to be very important.’
Beaver’s previous roles include group director of corporate affairs at
National Westminster Bank and director of publicity for Barnardo’s.
