Rumour reaches me that BSkyB’s corporate communications director
Tim Allan is off to pastures new. I am told the young Blairite wants to
perfect his impressive, if short, CV with an MBA.
Tony Blair’s former special adviser only joined BSkyB last June. Could
it be that our Tim found the conflict of loyalties too hard to bear when
the Labour Government blocked his employer’s bid for Manchester United
football club earlier this month?
Allan greets the news of his alleged academic venture with
characteristic calm, verging on indifference. (He claims mine is the
25th call he’s taken on the subject.) ’It’s not true,’ he says simply.
’The degree may happen in the future, but it isn’t happening now.
So Allan won’t be emulating Benjamin Wegg-Prosser, the ex-Mandelson
adviser who famously quit the Sun as its editor’s right-hand man last
month before having even sat at his desk.
Is there not even the slightest grain of truth in the rumour? Allan says
not: he claims it has been generated by journalists. Surely not.
