UK top ten regional newspaper group News Communications and Media

(Newscom) has recruited The Communication Group to handle financial PR

and public affairs for the group’s preliminary discussions to take over

Portsmouth and Sunderland Newspapers.

The Communication Group replaces Hudson Sandler after an annual

review.

The contract was awarded following a four-way pitch including The

Communication Group, Hudson Sandler, Citigate Dewe Rogerson and The

Hogarth Partnership.

Newscom is competing for the Portsmouth and Sunderland Newspapers

against News Quest, which retains Ludgate, and Johnston Press, which is

represented by Buchanan Communications.

’The Communication Group will concentrate on dealing with financial

journalists and analysts, promoting Newscom in the City as well as

briefing MPs whose constituencies are covered by Newscom titles,’ said

Andrew Diprose, Newscom corporate affairs manager.

Newscom is quoted on the London Stock Exchange and has a market

capitalisation just short of 200 million.

It publishes 120 titles in the UK, including flagship title Southern

Daily Echo, which has a weekly distribution in excess of 2.6 million

copies.
