Some 66 per cent of respondents to a poll of 3,000 members of the public said their trust in high street branches had been damaged during the recession.

The survey marks the first in a weekly series of PRWeek Reputation Checks in conjunction with research firm OnePoll.

The scale of the crisis facing the UK banking industry is illustrated by the fact 89 per cent of respondents have become more negative about banks over the past year and 42 per cent are 'mistrustful' of the industry. Ninety-three per cent want to see bonuses capped, regulated or both.
