Preston City Council has launched a free iPhone app to celebrate its blue plaque sites dedicated to the city's famous historic figures.

The council claims it is the first to release such an application, which allows people to take a virtual tour of Preston's blue plaque sites.

Visitors and residents will now be able to find out more about Preston's 'prestigious past', including such luminaries as US founding father Benjamin Franklin and inventor Richard Arkwright.

The app has been developed in partnership between the council, the University of Central Lancashire, JISC, which works with colleges and universities in the innovative use of digital technology, and Preston and South Ribble Civic Trust. It uses photos, audio clips and an online map to identify blue plaque sites, with links to more details on Wikipedia.
