While its tabloid rival, the Mirror, has been pondering on its own
name of late, I hear the Sun has been devoting its attention to monikers
in the public relations industry.
Under the leadership of features editor Mike Ridley, it seems the
features and Bizarre desks have been busily compiling a list of
ridiculous, weird, and sometimes downright sad names of public relations
people. The list has grown to 30-strong in just three months and
includes such gems as Theo Flingo, Izzy Hung, Torty Cocks, Tao
Northeast, Colby Cauchon and Ceri Berry.
’I am sure some of these people have perfectly ordinary names before
they go into public relations. But as soon as they join an agency and
discover that everyone has an eccentric name they change theirs as
well,’ says Ridley.
’Even when someone seems to have a normal name like Mark Brown,’ he
continues, warming to his theme, ’you discover, when they send you a
fax, that Mark is spelt with a ’C’ and Brown has three ’Es’ in it.’
Ridley says no one agency has an ascendancy on unusual names but he
stresses that it is a growing phenomenon. ’It seems to be spreading,’ he
’It’s like a disease.’
