The Tories have followed up the recent appointment of George Bridges as campaign chief with a further five full-time appointments - and a plan to recruit dozens of volunteers to work out of Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ)

Bridges was recently recalled to help run the general election campaign, working as an adviser to George Osborne. A former political director at CCHQ, Bridges was most recently a senior adviser at the lobbying firm Quiller Consultants.

Shadow home secretary Chris Grayling has also turned to the lobbying industry to appoint a new adviser, hiring Politics International director Bill Clare to the role. Clare joined the lobbying firm in 2006, having previously served as chief of staff to Liam Fox.

In addition, the Tories have boosted their press office with a number of new hires.

Henry de Zoete is leaving lobbying firm Portland to become an education press officer. Victoria Crawford joins from CNBC to assist the Treasury press team and Lisa Hunter moves from the Welsh Assembly press office to provide support to the Tories' climate change team.

The Tories have also appointed Salma Shah to a newly created press office post focusing on ethnic media.

Meanwhile, the party is looking to recruit a number of volunteers to help with campaigning in the run-up to the general election, widely expected to take place on 6 May.

A spokesman said: ‘Opportunities exist for undergraduates or graduates to volunteer to help the Conservative Party at CCHQ. The campaign volunteers will play an important role in the efforts ahead of the general election. We are offering the opportunity to become involved in campaigning and in assisting the campaign management with ongoing projects.'
