Gorst puts politics behind for a Consolidated career

Consolidated Communications has recruited the services of an

ex-Tory MP to boost the Parliamentary knowledge of its staff and

clients.

Sir John Gorst will be retained by the agency to advise clients and

staff on a broad range of political and EU issues.

The move continues a trend for non-public affairs consultancies to

appoint an in-house adviser on Parliamentary and lobbying matters.

Hi-tech specialist the Weber Group has just recruited a public affairs

director (see story, below).

Sir John was the rebel backbench MP for Hendon North for 27 years and

has sat on various select committees including Employment and National

Heritage.

He caused a stir in December last year when he resigned the Conservative

Party whip after a dispute with the then health secretary Stephen

Dorrell over funding for a hospital in Sir John’s constituency.

Sir John started his career in public relations and set up his own

consultancy in the 1960s. Commenting on his new role he said: ’I am

hoping to resurrect my activities, and it’ll make a refreshing and fun

change to the 27 years I spent in the House.’

Consolidated’s managing director Alastair Gornall said this move was a

response to ’a growing number of clients looking for advice on

parliamentary issues.

’Sir John will work with us to formulate a strategy for them and advise

on campaign implementation.’ In some cases this may mean recommending a

specialist lobbying agency.

Sir John will also be working with Consolidated staff to educate them in

the workings of Westminster and the EU, Gornall said.
