NEWS: Western Union banking on MS&L

International money transfer firm Western Union has hired Manning, Selvage and Lee to handle a pounds 200,000 pan-European PR offensive.

International money transfer firm Western Union has hired Manning,

Selvage and Lee to handle a pounds 200,000 pan-European PR offensive.

The American-based company, which has been providing money transfer

services for 140 years, appointed the agency without a pitch.

Manning, Selvage and Lee’s London office will co-ordinate the nine-

nation initiative, with national branches implementing local media

relations.

The PR drive, which will run in tandem with a poster campaign

orchestrated by MS&L’s sister firm, advertising agency DMB&B, will kick

off in June with a consumer push aimed at travellers and the travel

trade.

The first marketing stage will be followed in the autumn by a corporate

campaign of an as-yet undisclosed worth.

MS&L director Fiona Cohen said this was the first time Western Union had

mounted a systematic European public relations campaign, with previous

non-US work being carried out via New Jersey-based PR and advertising

agency Gilbert, Whitney and Johns.

Cohen, who said the awareness-raising public relations campaign would

focus mainly on media relations, credited MS&L’s appointment to several

factors.

‘I think we are strategically right, we have a European network in place

and we have specialists in such important areas as travel, consumer and

corporate. We also have a natural synergy in terms of our relationship

with DMB&B,’ she said.
