Construction toy company Meccano is seeking a new UK PR agency

after incumbent consultancy Consolidated Communications resigned the

account this month.

Meccano is in the middle of relaunching its toy range in the run-up to

its centenary celebrations next year.

Consolidated won the account over nine months ago and the agency is now

working out its three-month notice period (PR Week, 29 May 1998).

Consolidated managing director Alastair Gornall said: ’We had to resign

the business but I’m not prepared to go into the reasons why.’

The agency brief is mainly consumer PR, with some business to business

involving trade fairs. The new firm will report to Meccano UK’s managing

director, Richard Macey, and work closely with Meccano’s marketing staff

in London. It will also liaise with Meccano’s other PR agencies and

in-house staff in Europe.

Macey said: ’Consolidated have resigned the account. We’re looking for a

new PR company. Meccano is going through a total relaunch. This is a big

year for Meccano and PR is a big part of that package. We want a very

sharp and proactive PR company.’

Meccano was invented in 1900 by UK train set pioneer Frank Hornby and

patented in 1901. The firm relaunched its range of toys at the British

International Toy and Hobby Fair in London earlier this month. This

involved creating two new lines - Meccano play system and motion system

- and introducing character figures into the range.

As part of its centenary celebrations, the firm is holding competitions

across its main European markets for children to design the Meccano

vehicle of the future.
