National Geographic Channel is looking for its first UK PR head, to

review how the channel promotes programmes and to boost subscription

numbers.

Julie Hicks, the channel’s press and publicity manager, said the search

was at the early stages. An appointment is expected to be made by

April.

The role will report to marketing manager Sonya Jackson and lead a team

of two.

National Geographic has reviewed its consumer account with Charles

Barker BSMG. As a result, Charles Barker is no longer working for the

channel, and this week TV and entertainment specialist MaxWorks was set

to work on consumer PR on an on-going project basis. The new PR head

will review agency arrangements on arrival.

Hicks said that once an appointment is made the PR department will focus

on raising awareness of the brand across Europe. The channel wants to

promote coverage of its shows, such as Friday Night Wild, and did not

rule out appointing a UK-based agency to work with its PR agencies in

Hungary, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden.
