Leading energy company Eastern Group has appointed Joy King as its

corporate communications director, filling a vacancy which has been open

for three years.

King, who starts next week, will report to Eastern’s outgoing executive

chairman, John Devaney, and oversee a 13-strong team covering media

relations, employee communications, public affairs and community

relations.

Her responsibilities have been handled by the existing PR team since

former corporate communications head Margaret Stewart’s departure for

Yorkshire Water three years ago.

The post has been empty since 1995, the same year that Eastern was

bought by industrial conglomerate Hanson. The company was then demerged,

creating The Energy Group which earlier this year became the subject of

a fierce takeover battle between two US utilities companies, Texas

Utilities - its eventual owner - and Pacificorp.

King joins Eastern from insurance firm Pearl Assurance, where she has

been director of communications for two-and-a-half years, heading a

department of 12 staff. Pearl has no plans to replace her.
