Alison Canning, the ex-Burson-Marsteller chief executive who quit

in September, has unveiled her new venture - a ’virtual’ management

consultancy.

Canning is running the business, named First and 42nd, from her Belsize

Park home with a phone line, computer, e-mail and Web site.

She has started work for several clients, including IDV and Inchcape,

offering ’research-based strategic consultancy’ across a range of

communications disciplines. The downstream implementation of the

company’s research and strategy work will be outsourced to suppliers

like advertising, design and PR agencies.

Canning will either negotiate with PR suppliers to distribute press

releases and organise events or set up her own agency to deal

exclusively with downstream elements.

First and 42nd’s first employee, Jane Atkin, who is joining from B-M as

director of research and planning, will also work from home.

Canning will also hire specialists in internal communications, issues

management, regulatory affairs and advertising by the end of the year

and is planning to appoint personnel in New York and Sydney.

’It would have been obvious to go and set up a Cohn and Wolfe,’ Canning

said on her new venture. ’But I’ve been there and done that.’
