NEWS: Hirst takes marketing position at Southwark

Amanda Hirst has been named as Southwark Council’s first head of marketing and communications.

Amanda Hirst has been named as Southwark Council’s first head of

marketing and communications.

Hirst, 37, currently Reading Council head of marketing and PR, joins

Southwark on 16 September. She will lead a seven-strong team covering

PR, press and marketing and report to council chief executive Bob

Coomber.

At Reading Council, which she joined seven years ago as a publicity

officer, Hirst managed 30 staff, across PR, promotions, press,

marketing, desktop publishing and print.

Before joining Reading she worked for more than two years as a freelance

marketing consultant.

Hirst said that the creation of the new role followed a council

restructuring and a desire for more active local, regional and national

communications.

She said: ‘They have not done as much proactive PR as they might have

done. There is an awful lot of potential and one of my first jobs will

be to go and find what is going on.’

Reading Council has yet to announce Hirst’s successor.
