Sports retailer Nike UK has recruited Yvonne Iwaniuk from Shell

International’s public affairs team to fill the new role of corporate

communications head.

As Nike expands its activities in the UK, with the opening of a

superstore, Nike Town in Oxford Circus, this summer, Iwaniuk has been

brought in to beef up the company’s government relations and financial

PR.

She will also initiate community and social campaigns. Nike has acted on

criticism of the age and working conditions of labourers in its

sub-contractors’ factories in South-East Asia, and has worked to improve

its image following media coverage of these issues.

Last April Nike appointed Bell Pottinger to handle an ongoing corporate

PR project, designed to build the brand’s image in the women’s retail

sector and support its involvement in the Government’s school sports

policy agenda.

Iwaniuk joined Shell three years ago as a regional adviser for the

Middle East and Asia. She advises the oil company, from its UK

headquarters, on government relations, PR, sponsorship and promotions in

the region.

Before joining Shell, Iwaniuk worked at Burson-Marsteller for three

years, as an associate director in the public affairs division, working

for the Philippine government to attract foreign investment and for the

Malay government on deforestation.

Iwaniuk reports to marketing director Dermott Cleary, and to European

communications director Nigel Powell.

Leader, p9.
