Computer giant IBM is revamping its in-house PR arrangements and

seeking its first UK director of marketing, who will be responsible for

its marketing and communications departments.

IBM is also seeking a UK manager of corporate communications who will

report to the new director of marketing. It would not comment on the

future of its current corporate communications manager Alan

Gillings.

PR is currently headed in the UK by Claire Birks who is acting

communications and corporate affairs director following the retirement

of Martin Knight last year. Birks reports to Joerg Winkelmann, director

of corporate communications for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The company would not say whether the post of communications and

corporate affairs director would be retained following the appointment

of a director of marketing.

IBM’s PR team in the UK consists of Birks, Gillings and three press

officers. Its retained agency is Brodeur A Plus.

The IT company also uses Ogilvy Adams and Rinehart as a strategic

consultant in the EMEA region. It was appointed in 1995 to give IBM a

more consistent approach to PR across borders. This strategy is then

interpreted by local agencies and in-house departments in different

markets.
