Diary: Being in the Paddy wagon is no summer holiday

Talk about a busman’s holiday. Ian Wright, Boots Healthcare

International head of public relations, is currently spending his

month’s annual leave aboard the Lib-Dem Battle bus, as Paddy Ashdown’s

press spokesman.

Wright, an ex-Liberal Democrat constituency chairman for

Mid-Worcestershire and a one-time SDP worker, is complementing Ashdown’s

permanent London-based press team.

Apart from Paddy, Wright is fighting over the best seats with television

crews from the major networks and national newspaper journalists.

However, he tells me there’s not much time for sing-songs.

Wright, who spoke to me while trundling through the northern night,

relates: ’Today we left London at 7am, went to Edinburgh, flew to

Manchester and are now on the way to Southport. After that we’ll take a

helicopter, so Paddy can reach the BBC for Question Time.

’And today’s a pretty ordinary day,’ he concludes.
