Abbey National has appointed Hill and Knowlton director Nick

Chaloner as its new corporate communications chief.

The appointment ends a two month search for a replacement for Jane

Ageros, who is to join US investment bank Merrill Lynch as director of

marketing and communications in May.

Abbey National approached several in-house and consultancy professionals

for the job - including Coutts Bank’s head of corporate communications

Deborah Botwood-Smith and Financial Dynamics managing director Julian

Hanson-Smith - as well as internal candidates.

With a salary package believed to be worth around pounds 100,000 a year

and a title upgraded from head to director of corporate communications,

Chaloner will take charge of a department of 70 staff, including six

managers.

He will report to deputy chief executive Charles Toner, and media

relations, corporate literature and videos, events, customer relations

and shareholder communications will all come under his wing.

Chaloner has worked for Hill and Knowlton for nine years, latterly as

vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Before that he was

managing director of the agency’s Athens office for three years.

He is due to take up the post at Abbey National either at the end of

this month or early in May.

Profile, p24.
