Terence Gibbons, regional media head at the New Millennium
Experience Company (NMEC), has had a busy Christmas.
The festive season began with the appointment of two agencies, one in
Wales and one in England, (PR Week 8 January), to help generate local
media coverage of NMEC-sponsored millennium celebrations. The
appointments were the culmination of five months of work for
Following an article in PR Week in August, NMEC was approached by 300
agencies. Around 50 of these were asked to submit further information
and eventually seven were asked to pitch.
The appointment process over, Gibbons took himself home for Christmas
with a nasty dose of the flu. Unfortunately, he was on duty, handling
emergency enquiries while the press office was shut. During the five
days he was off Peter Mandelson resigned, the Millennium Commission
announced details of all the celebrations it was funding across the UK
and the Queen said she would be attending the Dome celebrations after
’I’ve been on duty at the Ministries of Defence, Transport and
Environment and, hand on heart, I don’t think anywhere is as busy as the
Dome,’ says Gibbons wearily.
