Terence Gibbons, regional media head at the New Millennium

Experience Company (NMEC), has had a busy Christmas.

The festive season began with the appointment of two agencies, one in

Wales and one in England, (PR Week 8 January), to help generate local

media coverage of NMEC-sponsored millennium celebrations. The

appointments were the culmination of five months of work for

Gibbons.

Following an article in PR Week in August, NMEC was approached by 300

agencies. Around 50 of these were asked to submit further information

and eventually seven were asked to pitch.

The appointment process over, Gibbons took himself home for Christmas

with a nasty dose of the flu. Unfortunately, he was on duty, handling

emergency enquiries while the press office was shut. During the five

days he was off Peter Mandelson resigned, the Millennium Commission

announced details of all the celebrations it was funding across the UK

and the Queen said she would be attending the Dome celebrations after

all.

’I’ve been on duty at the Ministries of Defence, Transport and

Environment and, hand on heart, I don’t think anywhere is as busy as the

Dome,’ says Gibbons wearily.
