The New Millennium Experience Company, which is building the Dome

in Greenwich, is looking to hire local PR agencies across nine English

regions to help to publicise subsidised events and projects in the

run-up to the Millennium.

Out of a total budget of pounds 758 million, the company is spending

pounds 200 million on regional activities, and wants PR help to

encourage local people to become involved.

The largest events will be nationwide schemes by the official Dome

sponsors, such as a Marks and Spencer campaign to persuade people to

donate their last hour’s salary of the Millennium to children’s

charities.

Smaller local events will range from arts festivals to sports events and

city greening projects. There will also be local promotion of the Dome’s

educational exhibits.

The company hopes to recruit up to nine agencies by this autumn, on

contracts running to the middle or end of the year 2000. It does not

expect to spend more than pounds 500,000 a year on regional public

relations.

The Welsh New Millennium Experience Company will recruit a local agency,

and is likely to need Welsh language PR support. The Northern Ireland

Millennium Company already retains Morrow Communications and the

Scottish company has hired Spence Allan Associates (PR Week, 7

August).

The agencies will be responsible for promoting local stories in a range

of media from regional papers and television to parish newsletters. They

will work closely with the festival advisers, education managers and

partnership managers based in the company’s nine regional offices. There

are no in-house regional PR managers.

Terence Gibbons will oversee regional PR, in his new post of regional

media head. He was recently promoted from national press officer for the

company.

Leader, p9.
