Channel 5 Broadcasting has named Sally Osman as its head of corporate

and PR with just six months to go before the station’s launch.

Osman, publisher of Redwood Publishing’s Harvey Nichols Magazine HN and

Boots Magazine will join the station - the UK’s fifth terrestrial

channel - in mid-July on an estimated salary of pounds 80,000.

The former director of press and publicity at BSkyB will handle

corporate PR, publicity, programme information, viewer correspondence

and internal communications.

The station’s acting head of public relations, Liz Roberts, who was

drafted in from BSkyB when the consortium won its bid last year, is

undecided over whether to stay on at Channel 5.

Osman will work with the station’s newly recruited press and public

relations manager Danielle Nay, and is likely to appoint a number of

press officers.

The channel has also hired PR agency, the Coalition Group, to help

tackle a massive programme of 9.6 million home visits to re-tune video

recorders.

The programme, dubbed ‘the burglar’s charter’ by critics, has been

allocated a budget of around pounds 55 million and is due to start late

this summer.

In addition, Coalition will advise on the launch of Channel 5 on 1

January, 1997.

Hill and Knowlton has been retained to provide political advice on the

Broadcasting Bill, currently progressing through Parliament, and on the

issue of digital television.
