Marjorie Thompson, communications chief at the Commission for

Racial Equality, is leaving to head up a new division at Saatchi and

Saatchi.

Thompson will join the advertising agency in September to run the Cause

Connection. The unit will focus on establishing links between charities

and business.

Reporting to executive director Dev Sharma, Thompson’s responsibilities

at the CRE include managing the publications, media and campaigns team,

who work closely with the strategy section.

She also sits on the corporate management team, deciding on issues such

as whether to publicise legal cases.

Before joining the Commission in 1993 Thompson was chair of the Campaign

for Nuclear Disarmament and has acted as an adviser to Aids and health

charities.

’It’s my first foray into the private sector,’ she told PR Week. ’I was

impressed by Saatchi and Saatchi’s ethics when working with them at the

Commission.’

The Commission for Racial Equality has had a pro bono relationship with

Saatchi and Saatchi since 1994.

Thompson said the commission was likely to review the management

situation in the run up to her departure, before deciding on her

replacement.
