Umbro International, the sportswear manufacturer that supplies kit

to the England football team, has kicked agency Shilland and Co into

touch.

Shilland, which was hired in February 1996 with a brief to work in the

UK and mainland Europe, was dropped several weeks ago.

Umbro UK brand marketing director Tim Gardiner confirmed that the

company has been holding talks with another agency and was considering

its communications options.

Shilland handled Umbro’s PR activities linked to the Euro 96 football

championships in England last summer. Umbro was a tournament

sponsor.

At its height Shilland’s budget for Umbro’s PR activities stretched to

six figures.

John Rivett headed up the Umbro business at Shilland before leaving his

directorship there to join Hill and Knowlton, whose clients include

rival sports goods giant Adidas, towards the end of last year.

Umbro is expected to step up PR activity in the run-up to next year’s

World Cup Finals in France.

’We were taken on primarily for Euro 96 last year,’ said Shilland chief

executive Peter Shilland. ’We got in excess of pounds 1.5 million worth

of coverage for them.’
