The Music Users’ Council of Europe, which represents retailers,

cinema-owners and orchestras, has hired public affairs consultancy

Clarke Burch Associates to handle its European lobbying. Clarke Burch

will focus on a European Union directive which proposes a strengthening

of copyright laws to protect against piracy that uses new technology

like the internet.

The council fears this directive will limit its members’ rights to

reproduce music in their respective trades. Clarke Burch Associates

partner John Clarke said: ’We are starting to get the council a profile

because they are totally ignored in this directive.’
